Why I Owe My Nervous System to Bhishma Pitamaha
I grew up with the sound of the Vishnu Sahasranama before I could even fully articulate what the words meant. In many Indian households, it’s just the background score of the morning—a rhythmic, hypnotic chant that signals the start of the day. But as I’ve grown older, and deeper into my work as an astrologer and researcher, my relationship with this "song" has changed completely. It has shifted from a ritual into a lifeline.
Lately, I have been meditating deeply on the image of Bhishma Pitamaha. We often remember him as the tragic warrior or the bound celibate, but I see him as the ultimate Architect of Resilience.
Imagine the scene: The greatest warrior of his time, lying on a bed of arrows. Every inch of his body is pierced. He is suspended between the earth and the sky, waiting for the sun to shift, waiting for the auspicious Uttarayana to leave his body. The physical pain must have been unimaginable. The emotional pain—watching his family destroy itself—was likely worse.
And yet, from that place of supreme discomfort, he did not scream. He did not curse. Instead, he gave us the Vishnu Sahasranama.
To me, this is the ultimate lesson in nervous system regulation. Bhishma didn’t just endure the pain; he transmuted it. He used sound, vibration, and the architectural brilliance of the 1000 names to re-wire the atmosphere around him. He turned a battlefield of blood into a sanctuary of peace.
I feel so deeply connected to him because he reminds me that we don't need a perfect life to find our center. We can be lying on our own metaphorical bed of arrows—stress, heartbreak, confusion—and still have the capacity to call upon something higher.
I am so grateful for this gift. It is more than a prayer; it is a remedy. It is the original tool for rewiring karmic patterns. Thank you, Bhishma Dev, for showing us that peace isn't the absence of arrows, but the presence of the Name. I made a video on Bhisma Dev, see it here - https://youtu.be/JQ3Q7Lc97yM?si=dlqzg4iq5VEA_qUY
